Rip them with MakeMKV, encode to an H264 mkv with Handbrake (High Profile, edited to spit out MKV instead of MP4). I have a separate Ubuntu i3 system (4ish years old) with a BluRay drive in it. I upgraded the RAM to 8Gb, thought about putting in an SSD decided against it (didn't have time), although every time it reboots I strongly reconsider (TAKES FOREVER). I don't have a lot of media (like, 2.5 Tb maybe) and don't need remote access, only need 1 or 2 transcoding streams at best, so I don't need a beefy server with a bunch of storage.īought a 2012 Mac Mini a few years ago, used off Amazon. Otherwise I've been very happy with the setup for several years now.
MAC MINI SERVER 2012 REVIEW MANUAL
I have to do a manual startup in these cases. The Mediasonics with age have developed a problem with the hard drives sometimes not mounting on a computer reboot, power outage or whatever. I have a once a week scripted backup of all the drives the backup case is otherwise turned off. I look for really good sales and buy drives in pairs as needed, and populate a second Mediasonic with backup drives. I use a Mediasonic 8 Bay USB3 hard drive case for my library, mostly with 8TB drives at the moment. I seem to notice some minor effects when multi-tasking. I've used a plain vanilla Mini (a 2017 but it's really the same as any Mini since 2014) at another location and it's OK. I always planned to put an SSD into it but never got around to it. I did up the RAM to 16GB, otherwise it's stock.

If you can find a 2012 i7 quad core that is a very nice Mini for a Plex server.
